About Us

Established in the mid-twentieth century, Reading University Conservative Association has always offered opportunities for like-minded students to meet, socialise and further their political understanding and aspirations.

The Association currently has well over 200 members, making RUCA one of the largest student conservative groups in the country and the largest of all societies at Reading University. Recruiting each year at the university Freshers’ Fayre and throughout each term at events, and through our campaigns, social media and word of mouth, RUCA has gone from strength to strength irrespective of the national political landscape.

Becoming a member of RUCA does not automatically make you a member of the Conservative Party; however, we do encourage members to join the Party and arrange this on their behalf (just get in touch with our Secretary). Similarly, RUCA is a member of the Conservative Future network, entitling those who are party members to visit external events such as conferences in London, announced to members on a regular basis.

Rather than existing as an extension of the Conservative Party, our members are aligned to one another on ideologically conservative grounds and operate under our own governance. RUCA is governed by its constitution and run on a day-to-day basis by the Executive Committee, led by the President. We have three Patrons, whose positions are honorary: The Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP, Rob Wilson MP and Daniel Hannan MEP.

RUCA works in partnership with local party Associations and Berkshire Area Conservative Future to support their events and campaigning activities. Both Reading East and Wokingham Conservative Associations put on superb evening events and are out supporting local candidates every weekend. Many University of Reading alumni have gone on to pursue a career in conservative politics, including Penny Mordaunt MP, Mark Prisk MP, Rob Wilson MP, Mike Penning MP and Hugh Robertson MP.
